Help Bruno Protect the Churchill River!
Make a donation in support of Bruno's 2000 km trip from Sydney to Happy Valley - Goose Bay. This fundraiser marks Sierra Club Canada's 1st Facebook Event of 2011 and aims to raise awareness of the destructive Churchill River Hydro Megaproject
Message from John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada:

I’m writing to tell you about my good friend in the hope you can help him.
Bruno Marcocchio has volunteered to represent Sierra Club Canada at the environmental hearings on the Churchill River mega-hydro project, so he is headed to Labrador where he will be working tirelessly to ensure we make the best arguments possible and see that tough questions are asked.
He’ll be keeping us posted via Facebook.

Let me tell you a bit about Bruno. Twenty years ago I made a phone call to Cape Breton. Bruno answered and I’ve had a friend and colleague ever since. Together we have confronted Environment Ministers, taken Nova Scotia to the Supreme Court over a coal power plant, and saved Digby Neck. He even kidnapped me once - but that’s another story!
Bruno is someone you can count on. If he had a theme song it would “Joe Hill” - the song about the labour organizer who “never dies” … just goes on “to organize”.
Well with Bruno it’s all about the environment. He is a meticulous researcher who marshals arguments like a lawyer. He’s outspoken with a quick wit and a big vocabulary. He is a force to be reckoned with.
A month ago I got phone call – it was Bruno demanding we stand up to the National Energy Board. He said: “I can’t talk long right now - I’ve got to get the car (a 1995 Ford Escort) checked out. It’s a long way to Happy Valley Goose Bay you know. Flights are expensive so I’m driving. The Churchill hearings start the first week of March.”
The Labrador Highway in winter is not something you take lightly. The journey will take Bruno over 2000 km from his home in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He’ll be travelling through wilderness on a snow covered road. The hearings could take up to an entire month, and then Bruno will make the long trip back again.
Will you help Bruno by sponsoring him 1 cent a kilometer - it’s only $20!
The telecommunication company Telus, working with www.fundchange.com, will match your donations - but we must raise at least $3500 to qualify, so we really need your help!
In addition to helping fund Bruno’s journey to Goose Bay, funds raised will be used to fight the Churchill River Hydro megaproject and other destructive projects in Atlantic Canada.
As I mentioned, Bruno will be keeping us posted throughout the month on Facebook. So be sure to tell your friends!
Please consider helping Bruno out with a donation.
