You Pick the Day

From January 10 - 20th, you and others around the world can vote on the date for this year's International Stop the Tar Sands Day.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - We are going to do things a little differently this year. Come to think of it, I think we do things for International Stop the Tar Sands Day a little differently every year. It keeps things interesting! Anyway, instead of me or any other of the organizers deciding when ISTSDay will take place in Canada, USA, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, this year you are going to pick the day.... Was 2011 the turning point year for the tar sands movement?

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (I’ve moved!) – As 2011 comes to an end I cannot help but wonder. Years from now when the pages of history are written on how people around the world stopped the largest and most destructive energy project in the world – the Albertan tar sands - will they say 2011 was the turning point? September 26th will be a day to remember

BERLIN, GERMANY - This Monday, September 26th, Canadians will be gathering on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for what will certainly be the biggest Canadian action against the tar sands and possibly largest climate action in Canadian history. Solidarity with the Tar Sands Action in DC

BERLIN, GERMANY - It was about a week after International Stop the Tar Sands Day (June 18th, 2011) that I found out about the Tar Sands Action. I was amazed. We had just finished one of the biggest international events ever to stop the tar sands (50 events on four different continents) and now people were going to do something even bigger in the US. Two weeks of civil disobedience right in front of the White House in DC to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline (if constructed, would nearly double the amount of tar sands oil going to the US) from being approved.

Action Report from Europe - International Stop the Tar Sands Day

BERLIN, GERMANY - Ok, I will admit, this is a little ridiculous. It took me nearly a month to post something on how things went on June 18th for International Stop the Tar Sands Day 2011. I promise I have a very good excuse, but I will get to that later.

First, what happened on June 18th here in Europe.

In most parts of Europe the weather was not too great on June 18th. It actually began to rain just as we were setting things up in front of the Canadian embassy in Berlin.  But like last year the rain stopped just before we before our "demo-fest"  (demonstration + festival) began and held off for the next two hours. Mother Nature was on our side again!... Read more »
