Report from Day 2 of Copenhagen Summit

The first-day was just for warming up. Picking up my delegate's badge, finding my bearings in the huge complex where the summit takes place and figuring out the value of the Danish currency, i.e. learning the hard way everything is expensive.
Today, on the second day, I could focus on more substantial things. Thanks to an acquaintance from my days in Brussels, I snuck into the daily meeting of the International Climate Action Network, a jam-packed room where all Environmental NGOs converge daily at 2PM to share information on the latest developments in different areas of the negotiations, such as mitigation, adaptation, financing, deforestation issues, etc.... The Case for Local Governments

Today, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) released a report entitled, "Act Locally: The Municipal Role in Fighting Climate Change."
In their report, the FCM call for an increased role for municipalities in dealing with climate change. They cite figures suggesting that 44% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions are directly or indirectly related to the actions of its municipalities. With the proper support, municipalities "could cut between 20 and 50 megatonnes of emissions, which would represent 15 to 40 per cent of Canada's 2020 emission reduction goal."... Read more »

My name is Emily Rideout and I’m here in beautiful Copenhagen, Denmark for the UN Climate Change negotiations (we call it COP (Conference of Parties) for short). I, along with the rest of the Sierra Club team will be reporting daily on the progress of the negotiations and Canada’s position within the climate talks, as well as bringing you videos and photos of the action on the ground. Our goal is to help Canadians understand what is happening here in Copenhagen so that they will have the information necessary to let our elected officials, be it federal, provincial or municipal, know that Canadians want Canada to be a leader in the negotiations. This is week five for me at the helm of the good ship Sierra, navigating through the rough waters of the Copenhagen Climate Conference -- perhaps the most important international negotiation of all time. The survival of millions of people could rest on the outcome of the one meeting. It’s not a single event, however – it’s the product of 20 years of negotiation and science. And it just got a big boost: the US Environmental Protection agency just made CO2 a pollutant in the United States, meaning President Obama can put limits on emissions without any new laws from the Congress where the climate bill is bogged down in partisan wrangling.... On to Copenhagen!

COP 15 in Copenhagen has begun. For two weeks, negotiators from around the world will be meeting to discuss developing an agreement on taking action against climate change. World leaders - including Stephen Harper - will also attend to lend their voice and political capital to the process.
For Stephen Harper and Canada, political capital does not amount to much. A winner of over 40 "Fossil of the Day" awards since 2006 - more than any other country - for being the most obstructive country at international climate negotaitions, Canada's reputation has become mud. It is a far cry from 1997 when Jean Chrétien and the Liberals first signed Kyoto and Canada was seen as a leader with a lot of hope for progress in the air.... Read more »

Thousands of Canadians Call for Action on Climate Change
