Revised Provincial Forest Strategy meets with both Cheers and Jeers from Environmental Coalition

Corner Brook, NL – The newly released Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy (SFMS) has taken some small steps towards true sustainability but still has a way to go according to an environmental coalition. The Sierra Club of Canada, the Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Labrador Métis Nation, the Third Signatory, Father John McCarthy, PhD, and the Canadian Nature Federation responded to a call for public input on the provincial strategy in August of 2003 by submitting a collective set of recommendations.... It presents comments, omissions, and recommendations to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sustainable Forest Management Strategy: Draft (SFMS) that was release for a 60-day public consideration process on June 2, 2003.

Recommendations in a recently released industry-SCC report represent a significant step forward towards resolving conflicts between logging and wilderness preservation in a watershed of about 1,000 km2 on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. This is an area of old-growth boreal forest that is ecologically significant, important for wilderness recreation and a source of fiber for Corner Brook Pulp and Paper’s newsprint mill in nearby Corner Brook

Sierra Club of Canada Demands Public Voice in Forestry Decisions on Crown Lands

Sackville, NB -- Leading environmentalists from all four Atlantic provinces expressed grave concerns about the ongoing mismanagement and destruction of the public forest resources at a conference in Sackville, New Brunswick this weekend.

Sierra Club of Canada Atlantic Canada Chapter convened the conference of concerned citizens, conservation groups, environmental experts and small scale woodlot owners from across Atlantic Canada to discuss, among other things, the state of crown lands in the region.
