Halloween makeup: safe or toxic?

Some parents may think the ghost-white makeup they slather on their kids’ faces this Halloween night is safe because of the “non-toxic” label on the package.

Think again, says John Bennett.

Bennett, executive director of Sierra Club Canada, says many makeup products that claim to be non-toxic contain heavy metals such as lead. That shocking revelation is highlighted in a 2009 report titled Pretty Scary: Could Halloween Face Paint Cause Lifelong Health Problems? by the U.S.-based Campaign for Safer Cosmetics.

Ten out of 10 face-paint products tested contained lead, which can harm children’s developing brains, the report said. Six out of 10 contained nickel, cobalt and/or chromium at higher-than-recommended levels.

Nova Scotia Wide Petition to Ban Fracking

This Thanksgiving weekend marks the official launch of Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter’s petition to ban hydraulic fracturing operations in Nova Scotia. The petition was launched at a public event outside the CORE All Energy Conference, coinciding with a “Town Hall” session led by Energy Ministers from PEI, NS, and NB.

The Petition Supporting a Legislated Ban on Hydraulic Fracturing for Natural Gas in Nova Scotia will run from October 7th to November 30th and will seek signatures from supporters of fresh, accessible water for present and future generations of Nova Scotians.

Councillors embroiled in debate over proposed pesticide ban

EDMONTON — An Edmonton lawn-care consultant warned a packed meeting Wednesday that a possible city pesticide ban “panders to extremists.”

The controversy drew more than 20 speakers on both sides of the issue, some calling for action to protect human health and the environment and others arguing the chemicals are beneficial and safe when applied properly.

“What’s wrong with having a beautiful, lush, green lawn? When did that become a criminal offence, to enjoy having pride in your property?” David Montgomery asked council’s transportation and public works committee.

Montgomery, who worked in the industry when he took part in a 2003 pesticide summit, said residents have the right to use legal products available in any hardware store.... Read more »
