"Shop Locally" Appreciation Event

Thank You Ottawa! Shopping Bag Giveaway

OTTAWA - Sierra Club Canada will distribute reusable shopping bags free of charge in the ByWard Market on Saturday, September 15th and Landsdowne Farmers' Market on Sunday, September 30th.

"We are showing a little appreciation to Ottawa’s local shoppers with a small gift," said John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada.

Shopping locally is one of the most effective ways an individual can contribute to creating a healthy environment and sustainable economy.

Throughout history the majority of our food came from areas we could walk to, or at least from within our own countries. "The food used in an average North American meal has travelled roughly a thousand kilometers - and a lot more if the meal contains out-of-season fruits or vegetables," said Mr. Bennett. "Now multiply those kilometres by the number of seats at the kitchen table - the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the average Canadian meal is simply staggering."

Sierra Club Canada has long-held that buying locally drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the local economy and producers.

The sturdy green shopping bags Sierra Club Canada is giving away are made of recycled material and will provide years of environmental relief from dreaded destructive plastic bags.

"It feels nice to celebrate our local producers and individual environmental action," said Mr. Bennett. "We just wanted to say thank you."

Please note that quantities are limited.
