Law must be enforced
Yes, we will accept the court's verdict in the Syncrude case.
Sierra Club Canada shares Robert B. White's frustration with the application of environmental law in Alberta and across Canada. It seems to be considered optional. We would see 10 times the number of accidents if traffic laws were applied with the same level of under resourcing, inefficiency and political interference.
Sierra Club Canada took the case of the ducks to the courts because it was going to happen again unless something was done.
Whatever the verdict, in the future, oilsands operators will be taking greater care. And who knows? We just might get some real enforceable regulation to prevent the release of toxic waste into the environment.
