CETA Environmental Information provides a public repository for

environmental information relevant to the Canada-EU Trade agreement

(CETA).  A short introduction to CETA can be found here.

The current government environmental information related to CETA has

not been subject to a transparent process.  This website attempts to

remedy the situation by:

*  asking our Environmental NGOs and scientists to provide relevant

and timely information to the public

* enabling transparent public participation by means of comments,

polls, voting on suggestions, a forum and other social media.

Canadian EU Trade Agreement (CETA)

The Canadian government is in the process of finalizing the draft

Initial Environmental Assessment(IEA) for the CETA negotiations.

Upon completion the government will consult with an external

environmental advisory committee.  Given that there have been nine

rounds of negotiation and we are nearing the last two rounds, it is

unfortunate that the public may not have the opportunity to view the

IEA until it is too late for input.

The EU-Canada Trade Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) is a

project funded by the European Commission (DG Trade) and has been

published online since July 2011, along with documents from civil

society meetings dated Sept 2007 & March 2011,  Interim reports and

an online discussion forum.  The SIA evaluates the social, economic

and environmental aspects of the agreement within the context of the

EU, Canada and relevant third countries in relation to the

Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

You can find the EU-Canada Trade SIA here:

http://www.eucanada-sia.org/

Because the Canadian environmental study and advisory process appears

to be non-transparent, this website will use the EU-SIA framework to

communicate Canadian CETA environmental information.

Based on the report The 21st Century Corporation: The CERES Roadmap

for Sustainability there are four broad areas of activity for

achieving sustainability as noted above.

PARTICIPATE

*    ...the essence of accountability lies in the relationships

between

the organisation and the society and/or stakeholder groups of

interest.

*     NGOs, civil society and accountability: making the people

accountable to capital. Gray, Bebbington, Collison 2005

You are stakeholders of our future

Environmental NGOs and Scientists -> participate

Public -> participate

Why participate?

The Canadian government is in the process of finalizing the draft

Initial Environmental Assessment(IEA) for CETA negotiations.  It´s

likely completion of the trade agreement will be early first quarter

2012.  Upon the government´s completion of the IEA they will consult

with an external environmental advisory committee and then publish

the final IEA to the public.

The process is not transparent.  There is no information about the

IEA available to the public. It is not clear who will be involved in

the external environmental committee. Given that there have been nine

rounds of negotiation and we are nearing the last two rounds, it is

unfortunate that the public and environmental groups may not have the

opportunity to view the IEA until it is too late for input.

The Canadian government is not being accountable to the public. The

position that environmental information should not be publicly

discussed during negotiations seems far from reasonable when we have

transparent access to the European CETA Sustainability Impact

Assessment at http://www.eucanada-sia.org/.

Without transparency or accountability in our government, how can

Canadians have confidence or trust in the environmental aspects of

the CETA agreement?  We need a trusted, centralized place to access

Environmental NGO and environmental scientists´ information in order

to understand the impacts of the Canadian-EU Trade Agreement.

CETA Environmental Issues

CETA ENVIRONMENT PUBLIC FEEDBACK:

Add your ideas and vote on other ideas. How can trade agreements be

sensitive to the environment? What would you like to see done better?

The CETA Environmental Information website provides a public

repository for environmental information relevant to the Canada-EU

Trade agreement (CETA). There is an environmental study in process by

the Federal government, however the process is not transparent. The

government provides ability to input generally on environmental

issues, but the official public information gathering for the CETA

environmental study was closed in 2009.

This is an experiment to provide dynamic and transparent stakeholder

feedback about CETA environmental issues. Say your peace!

Why participate?

The federal government is finalizing the draft Initial Environmental

Assessment before consulting an external environmental advisory

committee.  Even though we´ve been assured there will be an external

environmental advisory committee, we don´t know who will be on the

committee or how much time they will have to evaluate.  Serious

concerns about the U.S. government´s use of `external´ environmental

assessments have risen during the Keystone Pipeline, quoted here from

a Nov 7 2011 CBC article

Sanders was one of three senators who requested the review,

saying they were disturbed by media reports that a company that

performed an environmental review on behalf of the State Department

had listed pipeline developer TransCanada as a "major client."

There is a reasonable possibility that our Federal government will

provide an environmental assessment for CETA that does not include

Canadian ENGOs, independent environmental scientists and other

stakeholders. Your rigorous scientific or analytical assessment is

critical.
