Radioactive generators not going anywhere

OTTAWA (03/29/2011) – Bruce Power’s announcement it will delay a shipment of 16 radioactive steam generators to Sweden because it didn’t meet it’s “own standard of providing information” is spin.

The reality is, despite claims by CEO Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power has not successfully met regulatory requirements for the scheme.

That’s why Sierra Club Canada and the Canadian Environmental Law Association applied to federal court to review the decision of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission allowing the risky and controversial shipment.

Bruce Power, of course, claims the delay is to allow an “information flow to take place” and give them a chance to “answer any questions” First Nation and Métis groups may have. “It is our view that reasonable people, when given accurate information, will see the merits,” said CEO Hawthorne.

"Why does the nuclear industry always conclude it is a communications problem when people disagree? It's like they think if only they had a better communication plan, everyone would be happy,” said John Bennett, Sierra Club Canada Executive Director.

"We understand the facts, we are legitimate and we want an environmental assessment,” said Bennett. “We don’t want a quickie rubber stamp approval wrapped in a slick communication strategy.”
