Reform Party climate change deniers use unelected senate and dirty tricks

For immediate release

Ottawa - On the eve of the United Nations negotiations on Climate Change the Conservative government reached into its bag of dirty tricks to defeat the Climate Change Accountability Act.  Last night Conservative senators held a surprise vote on Bill C-311 and voted it down without debate.

"We worked on this bill for five years. The vast majority of our elected representatives voted for it.  It was killed in the night by trickery," said John Bennet, executive director of Sierra Club Canada.

Bill C-311 would have required the federal government to base climate change policy and emissions targets on science.

"We aren't giving up. We will continue to work with mothers and fathers who want a brighter future for their children. We find the solutions," said Bennett.

Bill C-311 was born out the necessity to fill the moral void created by our petro-government's refusal to take responsibility for the most pressing and devastating issue of our generation. It was developed with participation of scientists and environmentalist, was passed by the vast majority of members of parliament and supported by a petition signed by more than 150,000 Canadians.

Please do not give up on the

Please do not give up on the climate change bill. Mr. Harper is showing his true colours again, i.e. calculating manipulator that fails to respect the democratic process all to further the ultra-conservative agenda! Again please do not give up, this is our future! Regards, Tana Golbeck

Bill C-311

After so much hard work and support from all political parties, the defeat of Bill C-311 is terrible in a country noted for democracy. We citizens should express how profoundly upset we are about this just as the citizens of Canada demonstrated how they felt about the proroging of parliament.
