The accounts of person after person who went to Toronto to oppose the g8/g20 have been nothing short of horrific. It was a complete breakdown of civil liberties and any shreds of democracy that we continue to hold on to. The smashing of a few windows and abandoned police cars does not and never can justify the police response that took place. It was completely over the top for those that engaged in property destruction, and for people that did not engage in that tactic. Here is a short summary of the major indiscretions of the Toronto police-state (from rabble.ca): People were held for up to 35 hours with a single meal, inadequate water, as little as an ounce every 12 hours, facilities over-capacity, major delays in processing, inconsistent charges, people put in solitary confinement, no pillows or mattresses to sleep, unsanitary and unsafe living conditions, police intimidation of released detainees, non-stop light exposure/loss of natural light rhythm/sensory deprivation, exposure to extreme cold, sexual harassment of women and Queer people, youth as young as 15 in adult cells, denial of legal counsel, no phone call, belonging stolen/damaged, threats of assault/harassment, obviously illegal civilian arrests, no access to medication or medical treatment, abandonment. All of this is unacceptable. None of this can be justified by any of the tactics used in resisting the g8/g20. If we can not get angry about this and speak with a strong, unwavering voice then we will have lost our moral compass and have completely failed in our role in protecting civil liberties. I hope that everyone speaks out and speaks loudly,
