Executive Director, Stephen Hazell, presented the following at the Forum of Federations, “Environmental Assessment in Federations: Current Dynamics and Emerging Issues” conference on September 14, 2009.
It demonstrates that it is crucial that environmental assessment be used as a tool to reduce GHG emissions from new developments such as tar sands projects, coal mines and oil and gas pipelines. This is not the case with the current environmental assessment program in Canada, as typified by the Kearl tar sands project assessment.
