On June 6th, 2014, Sierra Club Canada Foundation was presented with a $60,000 grant from the RBC Royal Bank Blue Water Leadership Grant.  SCCF is proud to partner with the Town of Ajax and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) in a project to construct bioswales along the Ajax waterfront.  The native wetland plants of these bioswales will capture and filter the untreated stormwater before discharging into Lake Ontario.  This grant will also contribute towards a community awareness program.

The kickoff at Paradise Beach (previously known as Pickering Beach) began with a successful beach clean up by Ajax community and RBC volunteers.  Ajax Mayor Steve Parish  welcomed partners to the ceremony and discussed the need for the bioswale project in the area and its’ benefits to the water quality of the beach.

TRCA Waterfront Specialist Nancy Gaffney, discussed water quality and the importance of clean water for the health and leisure of the community.

Derek Serra, a regional vice-president for RBC, said, “We selected the Sierra Club because they align with our goals. We are talking about swimmable, fishable, drinking water for years to come.”
