Why Does Sierra Matter to You?

Dear Friend,

Since becoming Sierra Club Canada Foundation’s Interim Executive Director, I’ve heard so many wonderful stories about why Sierra Club matters to you.

I’ve heard from long-time supporters who’ve been deeply involved for decades.

From student interns who began volunteering at our national office just this month.

From the local group in Edmonton that convinced the city to build an urban wildlife underpass beneath a four-lane arterial road, one of the first of its kind in the world, to protect moose and other large mammals.

From Sierra Club's National Save the Bees team, who played an instrumental role in securing a dramatic reduction in the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in Ontario—the strongest action yet, anywhere in North America, to protect bees and other pollinators.

From local partners and community representatives in the Bay of Fundy who are working hard to protect an ecological gem by preventing the construction of the Energy East pipeline terminal in St. John, New Brunswick.

And we’re gearing up for the important work that will follow the federal election next week. National polls point to the environment as a top concern for Canadians. Nearly two-thirds say climate protection is more important than building Energy East or further developing the tar sands. 70% support a national cap and trade system to reduce climate pollution, and 82% support provincial renewable energy targets.

But whoever wins October 19, we have a lot of work ahead of us. And we can’t get it done without your help.

Canada’s next government will have a massive backlog of environmental priorities to address.

They’ll need to restore environmental assessment laws that have been gutted over the last several years.

They’ll have to restart the debate over Canada’s energy choices.

With a make-or-break climate summit coming up at the end of the year, they’ll have to choose a more responsible path for limiting Canada’s carbon emissions.

When Sierra Club speaks, change happens.

Your donation helps Sierra Club Canada Foundation work for secure, green jobs for Canadians. A sustainable, 21st-century economy. A healthy environment that is safe for us, our children, and our grandchildren. A Canada that steps up as a positive force on the world stage.

We know how to get it done. But we can’t do it without your help.
