April 2008
Tony Clement

John Baird
Minister of the Environment
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6
Dear Ministers Clement and Baird,
Sierra Club Canada applauds your government’s move to regulate the chemical bisphenol A under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. We fully support the leadership this action demonstrates in putting Canada first in the world to consider regulatory action on this chemical by declaring it hazardous to human health and the environment. We urge you to fully implement regulations to prevent release of this chemical into the environment and eliminate human exposure to it.
We commend Health Canada and Environment Canada scientists who have amassed a body of evidence that compels action. Canadians are increasingly concerned about toxic chemicals in the environment in our food and in consumer products. We urge you to follow through on this announcement with action on such products as liners of food containers and ensure that alternatives are equally considered for their safety.
Sierra Club of Canada works to deliver a healthier environment for a healthy population by encouraging bans on toxic pesticide use for frivolous purposes, the clean up of toxic sites, reduction at source of dangerous substances and promoting both safe and sustainable agriculture. We are pleased to see your government’s first steps to regulate bisphenol A.
Sincerely,
