Sierra Club Canada congratulates Premier Kathleen Wynne for stepping up to save the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA).The ELA is an essential part of Canada's environmental protection infrastructure and necessary for understanding how our environment is impacted by human activity.
"We thought the ELA was an endangered species until Premier Wynne stepped up," said Dan McDermott, Director of Sierra Club Canada’s Ontario Chapter.
The ELA was fundamental in demonstrating the how our lakes were being effected by Sulphur emissions from power plants and smelters. ELA research ultimately led to the US-Canada air quality agreement which prompted a significant reduction in toxic emissions, for which Canadians can be grateful.

Bruce Power, Canada’s first privately-owned nuclear power generator located on Lake Huron, had applied to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in 2010 to transport nuclear waste to a Swedish treatment facility. The waste would be shipped to Sweden via the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The federal government has hitched its wagon to U.S. President Barack Obama’s aggressive new vehicle fuel standards, which would slash greenhouse gas emissions from tailpipes after 2020 but elevate the cost of vehicles.
Environment Minister Peter Kent said Tuesday that Ottawa will match a proposal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to require that, by 2025, cars and light trucks be 50-per-cent more fuel efficient and emit half as much greenhouse gases as current models.
The new regulations for cars built between 2016 and 2025 would mean both environmental and economic benefits for motorists by reducing pollution and lowering the fuel costs of operating their vehicles, Mr. Kent said.
I had originally intended to write this column about my trip to Washington, DC on February 7-8, when I met with United States Senators and Congresspersons about climate and the Keystone XL pipeline. In brief, the trip was very successful in making links with strong proponents of climate action. Things are moving. The US General Accountability Office had decided that as a threat to federal government finances, climate change is now classed ‘high risk’.
