  • Thousands of Canadians demand for Canada to go beyond coal

    OTTAWA - Over 5,000 letters demanding stricter greenhouse gas regulations for coal power in Canada were submitted during the public consultation period on federal coal regulations. Climate Action Network Canada believes that if incorporated into the proposed regulations, measures proposed in member submissions could insure that these regulations have a meaningful impact on Canada’s path towards a safer, more sustainable future.

    Leading Canadian organizations are concerned that the proposed regulations, if not strengthened, will deliver only a 3 per cent improvement towards meeting Canada’s 2020 emissions target, and according to Environment Canada will have a “negligible impact” on non-polluting electricity generation.

  • Market offers verdict on nuclear option

    Don't you wish you could have bought Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) from the federal government? Had you been the buyer, you would have pocketed $60 million from the transaction. Sound like a strange deal? It is, but it's the kind of deal that is normal in the weird world of nuclear energy.

    SNC-Lavalin, which recently bought AECL from the federal government, put up $15 million for the company and then received $75 million in federal supports for research and development. For that, SNC gets most of AECL's $1.1 billion in assets.

  • Ontario's plans to store nuclear waste under Lake Huron have Michigan upset

    Where does all that nuclear waste go? Unlike in the 1980's when nuclear waste was dumped into oceans, now the preferred method is to bury it somewhere deep. The problem that is no community wants it in their neighbourhood.

    One option that has been ignored by goverment and the nuclear industry is above-ground Monitored Retrievable Storage. Instead, the cheapest method - burying the waste deep in old mines - seems to be the only method considered. Not surprisingly, this method saves nuclear companies billions of dollars, not to mention "out of sight, out the mind".

  • Deadline passes for steam generators

    Bruce Power’s licence to transport steam generators containing radiation for recycling expired Friday.

    The nuclear power generator has not reapplied and said in a news release Friday it will do so “when it’s appropriate.”

    It also said there is “no urgency” to ship the generators.

    Company spokesman John Peevers declined to answer questions about it.

    “Bruce Power continues to believe recycling offers the best environmental solution for reducing our footprint and is something we remain entirely committed to,” the company said in a statement.

    If Bruce Power applies to renew its licence, the Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control Act requires the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to hold another public hearing, the Council of Canadians said in a news release this week.

    The transformation of the Rossdale Generating Station in Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River Valley is currently under discussion.  City of Edmonton (Community Services) convened a series of public consultation meetings at the Chateau Louis regarding the future of the site.  In this regard, Sierra Club -- Prairie Chapter was represented by two members at the meeting of Sport and Leisure Stakeholders held on August 31, 2011 at the Chateau Louis hotel.

    Response to Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent’s announcement in Toronto today on “Domestic Climate Change Adaptation”

    OTTAWA – Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent attempted to mislead Canadians today by masking Canada’s lack of action on climate change. In a Toronto speech, Mr. Kent failed to mention that his government has done practically nothing to control the rising greenhouse gas emissions from the Tar Sands and other large industrial sectors.

    “Regardless what other countries are doing, Canada has a moral and legal obligation to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions - and it’s not doing it,” said John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada.

    In his announcement Minister Kent also failed to mention:

  • Positives of wind energy to be discussed at meeting organized by Friends of Wind Ontario

    An event held by Friends of Wind Ontario, will discuss the roadblocks, attitudes and misinformation that stops communities from working together towards energy sustainability. The meeting will share all the facts about renewable energy, particularly wind turbines.

    One of the topics to be talked about is how renewable energy is a good revenue source for independent farmers.
