  • Latest Lower Athabasca plan released to public

    While the government says the Lower Athabasca regional draft plan is representative of competing interests, some special interest groups say it leaves a lot to be desired.

    The plan was released for public comment Monday. This land-use blueprint covers an estimated 93,212 square kilometres of northeast Alberta, an area that includes most of the province's oilsands, large tracts of boreal forest and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo including Fort McMurray, Lac La Biche, Cold Lake and Bonnyville. The first draft of the regional plan was released in April for feedback.

    When an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan's Fukushima nuclear complex on March 11, as many as 13,000 highly radioactive spent uranium fuel rods, far exceeding the original design, were crammed into a pool of cooling water at the No. 4 Reactor Building.

    Without a circulating system to keep the water at about 30 C, heat from the nuclear waste would cause the water to boil, exposing the fuel rods — and their drop-dead radiation — to the atmosphere and anyone unfortunate enough to be nearby.

    About an hour into the catastrophe, the power went out and the water's temperature began rising. In a desperate bid to keep things cool, lead-shielded miliary helicopters scrambled to dump sea water onto the reactors and the complex's storage pools.

  • Petition to Ban Fracking in Nova Scotia Launched this Thanksgiving

     

    Halifax, N.S.- This Thanksgiving weekend will mark the official launch of Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter’s petition to ban  hydraulic fracturing operations in Nova Scotia. The petition will be launched at a public event outside the CORE All Energy Conference, coinciding with a “Town Hall” session led by Energy Ministers from PEI, NS, and NB.

    The Petition Supporting a Legislated Ban on Hydraulic Fracturing for Natural Gas in Nova Scotiawill run from October 7th to November 30th and will seek signatures from supporters of fresh, accessible water for present and future generations of Nova Scotians.

  • Japan’s Fukushima catastrophe brought radiation spikes to B.C.

    After Japan’s Fukushima catastrophe, Canadian government officials reassured jittery Canadians that the radioactive plume billowing from the destroyed nuclear reactors posed zero health risks in this country.

    In fact, there was reason to worry. Health Canada detected massive amounts of radioactive material from Fukushima in Canadian air in March and April at monitoring stations across the country.

    The level of radioactive iodine spiked above the federal maximum allowed limit in the air at four of the five sites where Health Canada monitors levels of specific radioisotopes.

    On March 18, seven days after an earthquake and tsunami triggered eventual nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan, the first radioactive material wafted over the Victoria suburb of Sidney on Vancouver Island.

  • Eco monitoring plan a non-plan says Sierra Club Canada

    The 'environmental monitoring' plan for the Tar Sands announced today by the federal government is actually a non-plan says Sierra Club Canada. Delay, delay, delay would be a more apt assessment of the federal government’s announcement.
     
    Monitoring is fine but the real question is limiting pollution and addressing climate change. Sierra Club Canada has no confidence the federal and Alberta governments will actually do that. There is a long history of allowing the oil companies to do what they want.
     
    "We want a real plan that limits pollution and addresses climate change," said Sierra Club Canada's Executive Director John Bennett. "Unfortunately, this plan is about public relations."
