  • Durban climate summit was a pathetic exercise in deceit

    It was an “emperor-has-no-clothes” moment. The 17-year-old youth delegate rose before the assembled participants at the Durban climate conference and looked them straight in the eye.

    “I speak for more than half the world’s population,” declared Anjali Appadurai of Maine’s College of the Atlantic. “We are the silent majority. You’ve given us a seat in this hall, but our interests are not at the table. What does it take to get a stake in this game? Lobbyists? Corporate influence? Money?”

    “You have been negotiating all of my life. In that time, you’ve failed to meet pledges, you’ve missed targets, and you’ve broken promises.”

  • Islanders rally to ban fracking on P.E.I.

    No fracking allowed was the clear message during a rally at Province House to put a permanent stop to the controversial form of natural gas exploration.

    Jennifer O’Neill of the Sierra Club’s Atlantic chapter was one of the rally organizers and said they wanted to raise awareness about fracking in conjunction with rallies held around Atlantic Canada this week.

    “Fracking isn’t good for the environment,” she said in Charlottetown on Tuesday.

    About 100 people gathered in front of Province House to wave signs, sing protest songs and voice their concerns about fracking.

    In the days and weeks since August 20th, North Americans have been made aware of the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, largely through very effective nonviolent protests in Washington D.C.  The Sierra Club of Canada, Prairie Chapter wishes to express its solidarity with those who have participated in these protests drawing attention to the issues around the proposed pipeline. 

    While the Sierra Club does not participate directly in civil disobedience, we definitely applaud the use of both lawful protest and nonviolent civil disobedience in the best traditions of Gandhian nonviolence that have helped to raise the issue of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

    On the surface, it’s easy to interpret Energy Minister Brad Duguid’s move to make it difficult for a future Tory government to kill some 1,800 pending wind energy projects as an attempt to entrench Liberal policies ahead of a defeat.

    But it’s just as likely part of the Liberals’ search for a wedge issue like the one they exploited so well in 2007, when then-Progressive Conservative leader John Tory lost his grip on the campaign over his promise to extend funding to faith-based schools.

    As you may know, for the past two weeks more than 180 countries have been gathered at the UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa to work towards a global deal to prevent climate change from moving from crisis to catastrophe.

    I just received a message from Hannah McKinnon, Campaigns Director for Climate Action Network Canada, who has been in Durban monitoring the climate change negotiations. Here’s what Hannah had to say:

    We are now entering the final hours of the UN climate negotiations and many of the central issues remain in the hands of the ministers. This is a critical time to send an urgent message that the world cannot wait. We need a climate treaty NOW.

  • Tar Sands opponents to descend on Parliament Hill

    Hundreds of demonstrators are vowing a day of civil disobedience on Parliament Hill in a bid to counter the Harper government’s vigorous promotion of oil-sands exports to the United States.

    Protesters are threatening to cross the RCMP’s security perimeter Monday and “sit down in a symbolic way to stand up against the Canadian tar sands,” echoing a series of protests in which 1,200 people were arrested in front of the White House last month.

    “We have hundreds of people who have signed up to risk arrest,” said Clayton Thomas-Muller, a campaigner with the Indigenous Environmental Network.

  • Stay home Minister Kent, says Sierra Club Canada

    OTTAWA - Environment Minister Kent should stay home for the next two weeks and NOT participate in the United Nations climate change negotiations in Durban, South Africa. Indeed, Canada's absence from the negotiations would be seen by many as a good thing.

    "Rather than waste taxpayers' money doing the bidding of the oil companies and winning Fossil of the Day awards, one austerity measure this government could and should take is to stay home,” said John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada. “The money saved could keep several government scientists employed for years and it would be welcomed by nearly everyone," said Mr. Bennett.

    Fossil of the Day awards go to countries that deliberately ignore their responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and try to block a global agreement," said Mr. Bennett. “And that’s exactly what Canada is doing.”
