It has been a busy few weeks here in Ottawa and across the country. People everywhere are talking about devastating changes to environmental law and regulation (Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and Fisheries Act) undemocratically crammed into the federal budget.

The International Energy Agency is warning that shooting past two degrees Celsius average global temperature will have “dire consequences.” And the World Bank is talking about 3.5 degrees of warming as being “devastating.” These are not environmental agencies. They are conservative, economically-oriented institutions. They are “establishment” with a capital E. Their language is increasingly alarmed, and yet nothing happens.
I love my bike and can't stand my helmet. I've made new year's resolutions to start wearing a helmet that always fail by February. New rules aimed at protecting the environment will drive up the price of new cars and trucks by thousands of dollars but save motorists money at the pump.
The federal government has hitched its wagon to U.S. President Barack Obama’s aggressive new vehicle fuel standards, which would slash greenhouse gas emissions from tailpipes after 2020 but elevate the cost of vehicles.
Environment Minister Peter Kent said Tuesday that Ottawa will match a proposal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to require that, by 2025, cars and light trucks be 50-per-cent more fuel efficient and emit half as much greenhouse gases as current models.
The new regulations for cars built between 2016 and 2025 would mean both environmental and economic benefits for motorists by reducing pollution and lowering the fuel costs of operating their vehicles, Mr. Kent said.
Toronto, October 2, 2012 – Ontario is blind to the impact forestry is having on wildlife species across the province says Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller today in the release of Part 2 of his 2011/2012 Annual Report, Losing Our Touch. Despite a legal requirement to do so, Miller says the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) does not adequately monitor forest wildlife populations and incorporate the information into its own forest management policies.
When a class environmental assessment eighteen years ago authorized MNR to proceed with planning for timber harvesting and related activities, it also imposed legally binding terms and conditions. One requirement was the establishment of a province-wide monitoring program that would assess how timber harvesting affects forest-dwelling species.
On this Earth Day I am urging you to take a moment and help us fight for the protection of people living downstream of the Tar Sands. The health and well-being of these downstream communities, including Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan, has been sacrificed at the altar of economic-growth-at-all-costs.
(Mississauga) -- The urban river valley designation announced today by Premier Dalton McGuinty enables municipalities to add publicly-owned lands to Ontario’s Greenbelt and ensures that important water connections between the Greenbelt and Lake Ontario will be protected. For Mississauga, growing the Greenbelt along the Credit River provides the greatest protection for these often stressed urban features.
A Greenbelt designation would draw a permanent, legal boundary around a local urban river valley. Future municipal councils could only expand this boundary, but under the Greenbelt Act, 2005, the area of protection cannot shrink.
“By adding our Credit River valley lands to the Greenbelt we are providing the greatest protection available to these treasured natural features,” said Rosemary Keenan, Chair of Sierra Club Peel Group.
OTTAWA – Today’s announcement by federal environment minister Peter Kent will further relax already grossly-inadequate regulations for coal-fired power plant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite growing evidence of climate change, particularly this summer’s record Arctic Ocean ice-loss, the government of Canada continues to ignore the science.
“Arctic Ocean ice is at an all-time low and we are in the midst of a record breaking year for heat waves, droughts and torrential rain storms,” said Sierra Club Canada Executive Director John Bennett. “We don’t have 50 years to fix this problem as the regulations will allow – action is needed now!”
While other countries are abandoning nuclear power post Fukushima and investing heavily in renewable energy, the Ontario government is spending billions to keep nuclear on life support.
This November the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold public hearings to consider Ontario Power Generation (OPG)’s request to spend $8 – 14 billion to rebuild the Darlington nuclear station in order to stretch out its operational life to 2055.
