You are invited to attend this important community event about our Gulf of St. Lawrence. Nova Scotia, particularly the North Shore, and western Cape Breton, is dependent on the Gulf for renewable jobs in tourism and the fishing industry. As residents, the Gulf is central to our way of life.
The Gulf of St. Lawrence is a semi-landlocked, inland sea and breeding area for over 2,000 marine species who spawn, nurse and migrate year around. Because the Gulf’s waters only exchange with the Atlantic once a year due to its counterclockwise currents, a spill could wash up on the coastlines of all five Atlantic provinces over the course of a year.
When it comes to exposure to hazardous chemicals, children are not just little adults. “Children are more vulnerable to environmental hazards,” states the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, a subcommittee of the American Pediatric Society. “They eat, drink and breathe more than adults on a pound for pound basis.”(1) This means children are proportionally more exposed to toxins in air, water and food.
In areas of unconventional gas development, children are exposed to multiple industrial toxins, through air, and potentially through water and soil. Yet children’s health remains one of the many unexamined issues of this contentious industry.

One of the most powerful foes of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline through northern British Columbia is not a lawyer or a conservation group or any of the many First Nations who have lined up against the project.
It’s a very large, very, very old fish.
The Nechako white sturgeon is listed as an endangered species under the federal Species At Risk Act, a designation which is supposed to legally protect the sturgeon’s habitat so the species can recover.
The pipeline is planned to cross the Stewart and Endako rivers, where the highly imperilled species — there are estimated to be only 335 left — live.
Sierra Club Peel Group Chair Peter Orphanos died on December 17th after a long struggle with cancer. Under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA), Brampton Brick is required to respond to all objectors within a two year period, expiring on November 4, 2012. It is important that you respond to reconfirm your objection to the Norval Quarry within 20 days of receiving Brampton Brick’s notice, otherwise your concerns are withdrawn and deemed no longer valid. Although Brampton Brick has updated a few of their component studies since your original objection letter, almost all of our original objections remain outstanding.
There has been almost no contact from Brampton Brick attempting to resolve any of our concerns!
I had originally intended to write this column about my trip to Washington, DC on February 7-8, when I met with United States Senators and Congresspersons about climate and the Keystone XL pipeline. In brief, the trip was very successful in making links with strong proponents of climate action. Things are moving. The US General Accountability Office had decided that as a threat to federal government finances, climate change is now classed ‘high risk’.
OTTAWA - Canada announced on Tuesday its latest set of regulations on cars and light trucks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as the UN climate talks entered its second day in Doha, Qatar.
The proposed regulations - expected to be finalized in 2013 - would require cars with model years 2017 to 2025 to cut on-road emissions by an average of 5 percent every year.
Light trucks, with model years 2017 to 2021, will be required to achieve an average of 3.5 percent reduction in annual GHG emissions, and a 5-percent cut for model years 2022 to 2025.
"Compared to 2008 models, vehicles rolling off the line in 2025 will produce almost 50 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions and consume up to 50 percent less fuel," said Environment Minister Peter Kent while announcing the newly proposed regulations at a car dealership.
