    IJC to allow Georgian Bay to drop another 1.25 meters

    (Midland) -- The International Joint Commission may be intending to allow water levels in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay to drop by more than 1.25 meters (4 feet) below current levels that are already at historically low threatening shoreline wetlands, navigation and access of island properties if the recommendations of a report by the Upper Great Lakes Study Board are adopted.  A video shown at a series of public meeting arranged by the IJC  appeared to downplay the implications to the middle lakes.

    Halifax, NS – Community and environmental groups, members of the Nova Scotia Fracking Resource and Action Coalition, applaud the Municipality of Colchester Municipal Sewer Use Appeal Committee for its decision not to allow the release of fracking wastewater through the Debert sewage system. 

  • Acclaimed enviro writer exposes the politics behind low lake levels

    Pressure is mounting on the U.S. and Canadian governments to explore ways to restore water levels on Lakes Michigan and Huron that have been lowered nearly two feet due to historic dredging on the St. Clair River. The two lakes, which are actually one body of water connected at the Straits of Mackinac, have been below their long-term average for more than a decade, and forecasters say in the coming months they could plunge below their record low.

    Now an organization of 90 mayors representing more than 15 million residents in cities across the Great Lakes region is telling the International Joint Commission that it is "dissatisfied" with a recent study that determined restoring lake levels by installing some type of structure to repair damage done to the St. Clair River would be a costly project that could take decades and ultimately do more harm than good.

    Canada's history (and present state) as a place of mines and sawmills and boom-bust cycles has left a lot of pock marks across the landscape. Sometimes someone deals with them, sometimes nobody does.

    Marathon, Ontario, has had a string of hazardous materials spilled/leaked/mishandled out of an abandoned sawmill over the last few years, on top of the already dirty history of operation. Said contamination blessed the surrounding area with everyone's favourite friends “Miss Mercury” and “Captain PCB”.

  • Report warns of oilsands impacts on groundwater

    EDMONTON - Thousands of people depend on the water below Alberta’s oilsands region, but the effects of industrial development on those water tables is not yet fully understood, a new report says.

    The Cumulative Environmental Management Association released a 37-page report Tuesday that explains groundwater in the region, and warns that lower water levels and poor quality could have “far-reaching consequences.”

    It has been a busy few weeks here in Ottawa and across the country. People everywhere are talking about devastating changes to environmental law and regulation (Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and Fisheries Act) undemocratically crammed into the federal budget.

  • Municipality of Colchester holds public hearings on fracking waste water

    There are warnings the tidal bore in the Bay of Fundy will light up by itself if a plan to dump more than four-million litres of fracking waste water into the ocean goes ahead.

    The water, which has some level of naturally occurring radiation in it, is in a holding tank right now, but Atlantic Industrial Services plans to dump that water into the Debert sewer system if it can get approval.

    The district manager for the provincial environment department’s Truro office has given the dump the thumbs up, but nothing is official until the Municipality of Colchester says so.

    The municipality is holding public hearings on the topic tonight and tomorrow.

    There are concerns fracking companies don’t reveal all the chemicals used in their “special sauce” recipe that they use to get the gas out of the ground.

  • Tell the IJC to Restore our Water Levels!

    The IJC meetings on the Great Lakes water levels finished off mid-July with some of its most successful turnouts (read about the Midland meeting, where 600+ people attended). The struggle is not over yet.  Please remember that the IJC is accepting public comments via mail by September 30, 2012.  It is also important to write your MP with the same message: Restore our water levels!

    Before writing your letter(s) please ask yourself these questions:

    1.       What do 13 unprecedented years of low water levels mean to you economically and environmentally ( eg loss of wetlands and fish habitat, water quality concerns, invasion of Phragmites australis on exposed shorelines)?
