    We are just a week away from #BlackOutSpeakOut day (June 4th). I can tell you the campaign momentum is building! The list of participating organizations is over 100 and growing! Maude Barlow just told me The Council of Canadians is also joining the protest. All across the country Canadians are recognizing that silence is not an option in face of the war on nature and democracy.

    This week here in Ottawa we have two events:

  • CELEBRATION OF OCEANS DAY TO PROTECT GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE
    Merigomish, NS – Save Our Seas and Shores, Sierra Club Atlantic, and the Wandering Menstrual Singers are calling on friends and family to join them in a spirited sing along to acknowledge, respect and honour Canada’s Oceans and especially, the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

    “We will be gathering on the shores of Malignant Cove Beach (between Antigonish and New Glasgow) this Thursday June 7thbetween 5:30-6:30 pm to celebrate the beauty, richness and diversity of the Gulf and the need for it to be protected for future generations,” says Mary Gorman of Merigomish. " We are hoping to raise awareness of the importance of keeping our oceans healthy. Every second breath we take as humans, is enabled by oxygen created by our oceans."

    "We feel immensely fortunate to live by the inspiration of the sea", says Karen Fish, a singer with the Antigonish group.

    "People tend to look at our oceans as vast and never ending.

  • Prince Edward Island youth to put on their green thumbs with launch of Sierra Buddies this fall

    Charlottetown, P.E.I– Sierra Club Canada Atlantic Chapter has received support from the TELUS Community Board that will enable them to continue their youth mentorship program, Sierra Buddies, in PEI this fall.

    The Sierra Buddies program guides youth to help make their schools and communities greener, while at the same time preparing them to be future leaders. Students at the Grade 10 level who have been trained and educated about environmental issues and concepts are paired up with Grade 6 students to share and spread their knowledge.

  • Seal cull will not revive Canada's cod stocks, say scientists

    Canada's multimillion dollar proposal to cull grey seals will not bring back the ravaged stocks of Atlantic cod it is intended to help, scientists have said.

    In October, the Canadian Senate approved a controversial plan to kill 70,000 grey seals in the Gulf of St Lawrence under a bounty system next year, ostensibly to revive the cod stocks that the seals were eating.

    But a group of marine scientists at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have said in a recent open letter: "There is no credible scientific evidence to suggest a cull of grey seals in Atlantic Canada would help depleted fish stocks recover.

  • Letter Requesting that Human Impacts on Oceans be Included in Assessing Ecologically Significant Habitats

    We write as a follow-up to the meeting on Ecologically and Biologically SignificantAreas (EBSAs) held in St. John's, Newfoundland, October 23-25 2012. It was encouraging to view and hear the findings regarding Canada's ocean habitats off northern Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador. We view this as an ongoing process as we all strive to better understand the complex dynamics of our oceans.

               

  • New research questions need for streamlining enviro assessments

    Research is questioning the logic behind the federal government's move to streamline environmental assessments.

    After tracking thousands of assessments over a decade, the peer-reviewed findings of Derrick de Kerckhove suggest a great majority of Fisheries Act environmental reviews over the last decade were completed well within recommended timelines.

    Nor was there a bottleneck of projects being held up by a clogged review process, he said.

    "We didn't find any. Even when the input was high, it seemed to be handled very well."

    De Kerckhove, a University of Toronto PhD candidate, analyzed 10 years worth of data from Department of Fisheries and Oceans annual reports on the progress of environmental assessments triggered under the Fisheries Act. That legislation generates more such reviews than almost any other — anywhere from 7,700 to more than 12,000 in a single year.

  • New National Sierra Club President in Halifax on Heels of Protests in Washington

    Howie Chong is the new National President of the Sierra Club Canada, and he is in Halifax this week to meet supporters, and to get input and ideas about organization priorities and direction.

     

    He is here to introduce himself to members of the Sierra Club Atlantic, based in Halifax, and to encourage involvement and participation on important regional and national issues including: oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, opposition to fracking, and promoting renewable energy.

     

  • Arctic sea ice levels hit record low

    The amount of sea ice in the Arctic is at an all-time low, suggesting that climate change is leading to a dramatic shift in the north, according to a new report.

    In an analysis released this week, the U.S.-based National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said that Arctic sea ice cover has melted to a record low, breaking the previous record set in 2007.

    Satellite data from August 26 showed that sea ice extent fell to 4.10 million square kilometers, the lowest amount ever seen since observations of the polar cap began three decades ago.

    On September 18, 2007, the date of the previous record low, sea ice extent was measured at 4.17 million square kilometres.

  • Canadian Energy Strategy Must Work for Atlantic Canada says Energy Coalition

     

    HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (July 24, 2012) - The Atlantic Canada Sustainable Energy Coalition (ACSEC) welcomes this week’s discussions of a Canadian Energy Strategy among Premiers as they gather in Halifax for the annual Council

    of the Federation meeting – but stresses any national strategy must respect the Atlantic Provinces’ energy goals, not just Alberta’s.

     

    “Alberta arrived at last year’s meeting of National Energy Ministers in Kananaskis with a very clear set of priorities for a Canadian Energy Strategy,” explained ACSEC’s Regional Coordinator Catherine Abreu. “The Atlantic Provinces must come to this week’s meeting prepared to push for a balanced plan that supports their transition to a low-carbon economy, reflects their leadership, and works to improve Atlantic Canadians’ energy security.”
