Personal Details

Chelsea Flook was born in Guelph, Ontario and has lived most of her life in the southern Ontario area. She attended the University of Ottawa for Political Science and Philosophy, and went on to pursue an M.A. in Critical Disability Studies at York University. Asides from books and theory, Chelsea took a bit of extra time completing her undergraduate degree to get involved in organizing anti-war demonstrations, anti-poverty work, anti-SPP organizing, food security issues, environmental justice, community kitchens, community radio, solidarity response network development, and disability rights advocacy and accessibility.

As a graduate student at York University, Chelsea became involved in her union and what became the longest strike at an English university in Canada's history in an 85 day long battle for fair wages and against cut-backs. She was elected to the executive committee of CUPE 3903 after the strike as Chief Steward Unit 3 and organized departmental stewards to defend the new collective agreement. Chelsea also became involved in Samba Elegua, and later, Rhythms of Resistance Toronto; two drum groups that often play protests and other community events. In the lead up to the G20, Chelsea was involved in fundraising, arts committee, and the Toxic Tour/ Environmental Justice themed day of resistance.

Chelsea relocated to Edmonton to become a member of the Sierra Club Prairie Chapter. Her experience and talents have added a strong grounding to the work of the Sierra Club Prairie, and she is proud and exhilarated to be the Executive Director for a grassroots community based movement that seeks to protect the integrity of both community and environmental health.
