Hygiene & Hair washing (and daily water use tally)

Day 10 already!

Just for those who may be curious, I am still maintaining a healthy level of personal hygiene. I'm not covering it up with perfume or anything. haha

I also haven't been running marathons, though. I've thought about jogging since it's getting nice out. I should do that and bathe afterwards and see if the same amount of water still does a good enough job...

[Update: Originally, I had done the math to tally 3 day's worth of water consumption, and when a website glitch lost it all, I was so frustrated I didn't have the energy to do it all again. So here it is now.]

March 6

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

·         1/3 c water added to juice from concentrate = 0.079 L

·         1 cup water = 0.25 L

·         4 cups water boiled (my kettle has a 1L minimum setting, which sucks!), of which I only drank 2 cups... (tea) = 1 L

·         Flush @ home = 5.527 L (6L – 473mL)

·         3 oz wash hands = 0.089 L

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

o   TOTAL: 7.181 L

March 7

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

·         2 cups water @ breakfast = 0.5 L

·         60 oz dishes = 1.774 L

·         2 cups @ Dave’s = 0.5 L

·         2 cups @ home = 0.5 L

·         5.527 L flush – 1.89 L greywater = 3.637 L

·         3 oz wash hands = 0.089 L

·         (re-used cat’s water in plant, refilled with 3 cups)

·         56 oz wash hair = 1.656 L

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

o   TOTAL: 8.892 L

March 8

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

·         6 L flush – 473 mL (0.473 L) - 1.89 L offset = 3.637 L

·         Dishes @ work, 25 oz (1 mug, bowl, 2 forks, one knife) = 0.739 L

·         13 oz fill kettle x2 (only 2 cups drank of green tea) = 0.769 L

·         473 mL drank = 0.473 L

·         5 oz wash hands = 0.148 L

·         3 oz wash hands = 0.089 L

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

o   TOTAL: 6.091 L

March 9

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

·         2 oz brush teeth = 0.059 L

·         3 oz wash hands & face = 0.089 L

·         Drank 1 cup tea (14 oz water boiled) = 0.414 L

·         Drank 1/4 cup water = 0.125 L

·         Drank 473 mL water = 0.473 L

·         Flush @ work = 6 L

·         5 oz wash bangs @ friend’s house = 0.148 L

·         4 oz wash face & brush teeth = 0.118 L

o   TOTAL: 7.544 L

March 10

·         3 oz wash plate & knife = 0.089 L

·         14 oz boiled water for 1 tea = 0.414 L

·         8 oz boiled water for 1 tea (used water left over from last time) = 0.236 L

·         32 oz wash hair & body = 0.946 L

·         1 oz brush teeth = 0.03 L

·         Drank 473 mL water = 0.473

·         flush @ work  = 6 L

·         3 oz wash hands = 0.089 L

very nice, I bet you rival

very nice, I bet you rival NASA astronauts, in terms of effective water use! Although there is no single silver-bullet or golden rule to combating global water shortages, this is a great example of a potentially huge difference-maker if more people took on this challenge.

water for washing

Hey Celeste! I love what you are doing to show most Canadians what we can do to cut back on water use. I thought i'd add a thought- I was in Mongolia last year, staying with a family for a few days as I passed through on my travels and finally asked them why they had all shaved their heads. The mother shyly told us that it was to save water. The family did not wash often, and only hands and feet were the priority. I understood why when I went to get the daily water about 1 km away, and had to help the dad of the family lug the jug uphill back to their ger (yurt). One easy way that lots of the world saves on water- no plumbing ;) Maybe one day we'll go back to a simpler system... Good luck with the rest of it! -shealagh

My home water use!

Hi there -

I just got my home water bill and I have been using 91L per day per person in my home in Halifax. Goodness knows what the count would be including water used outside my home! Good luck Celeste - you have inspired me to cut my water use at LEAST in half ...

Cheers,

Gretchen
