Cancun climate accords hailed as ‘new beginning’

CANCUN, Mexico — The United Nations annual climate-change summit has concluded with nations adopting a set of agreements meant to lead them toward deep cuts in pollution.

The agreements, which put forward “recognized” but not legally binding targets, were reached after a marathon overnight negotiating session that extended the conference by an extra day.

Following the disappointment of last year’s summit in Copenhagen, which failed to reach a binding agreement, those involved said Saturday the new package will allow them to finally move forward.
