Call for Nominations 2021

Sierra Club Canada Foundation (SCCF) is recruiting new board members for the upcoming term, starting in June 2021. We encourage Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQQIPA individuals and people who are members of Canada’s diverse communities to apply to join the board. We are committed to building and maintaining a work environment that is welcoming to people who bring other ways of seeing, knowing and communicating to our work.

Organization Overview

SCCF is a registered charity whose mission is to be a voice for the earth. We work to protect and preserve the natural environment and to empower people to be stewards of the earth in their communities. Since 1971, SCCF has funded tens of millions of dollars’ worth of important work, from small local projects to large, multi-year campaigns with many volunteers, scientists and organizations.

We are funded by individual donors, grassroots memberships, foundations and others who recognize that we all have a right to a safe and healthy environment: clean air, clean water, open spaces, wilderness, and healthy and diverse ecosystems. We are unique in the environmental movement because we enable average citizens to organize activities that improve our local, national and global environments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Board members work together to provide proper governance and oversight to the organization. They work collaboratively with the SCCF team, including staff, board members and volunteers to implement our strategic plan, project commitments, communications and development. We seek those who work well in a team setting and have excellent communication and listening skills.

The board of directors meets once a month for two hours. Members of the board are expected to participate in at least one committee, assist in fundraising and support the work of the organization. Regional and Sierra Youth directors must liaise with their chapters. All board and committee meetings are held online.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Individuals must be members of SCCF and age 18 or older at the time of their election or appointment to the board. Preference will be given to applicants who have an understanding and practice of equity, diversity and inclusion. Proficiency in English is required and bilingualism is an asset. Selections will also factor in skills, experience, geography and diversity of the entire board.

You have experience, knowledge and abilities in some of the following:

  • Financial literacy and/or accounting skills
  • Fundraising and/or membership development
  • Charity and/or non-profit governance
  • Communications, including social media
  • Environmental law and/or policy development
