Finalement, les menaces des changements climatiques, de l’extinction des espèces, de la contamination toxique et de la déforestation sont les symptômes d’un problème plus grand. Les pionniers de la révolution industrielle n’auraient pu imaginer le confort et le progrès qu’elle nous a fourni. Mais ce sont les présomptions—que la croissance économique est le but même, qu’un espace naturel est gaspillé jusqu’à ce qu’il soit développé, que les coûts environnementaux sont des coûts externés qui ne rentrent pas dans le paradigme économique— qui causent la crise environnementale. Notre programme de réorientation économique et politique vers une économie durable cherche les solutions qui minimisent notre empreinte écologique, qui réduisent la croissance démographique et qui assistent aux pays en voie de développement à déligner un chemin qui évite nos propres fautes.
