Pressure is mounting on the U.S. and Canadian governments to explore ways to restore water levels on Lakes Michigan and Huron that have been lowered nearly two feet due to historic dredging on the St. Clair River. The two lakes, which are actually one body of water connected at the Straits of Mackinac, have been below their long-term average for more than a decade, and forecasters say in the coming months they could plunge below their record low.
Now an organization of 90 mayors representing more than 15 million residents in cities across the Great Lakes region is telling the International Joint Commission that it is "dissatisfied" with a recent study that determined restoring lake levels by installing some type of structure to repair damage done to the St. Clair River would be a costly project that could take decades and ultimately do more harm than good.
On Wednesday September 25, 2012, five members of Sierra Club Canada joined the group Hungry for Climate Leadership on Parliament Hill in solidarity with their 12-Day Fast for Climate Change (seven climate activists began their fast on September 21st and will continue to fast until October 2nd).
Leader of the Green Party of Canada Elizabeth May, who is fasting for five days in solidarity with the group, also came to show her support and sign the pledge that aims to (1) end fossil fuel subsidies, (2) put a price on carbon, and (3) support the development of a renewable energy plan for Canada. Hungry for Climate Leadership urges the Canadian government to take immediate action to help mitigate the climate change crisis.
In an Open Public Letter sent out on August 31, 2012 – the first-announced deadline for comments on their Report on International Great Lakes Study – the International Joint Commission (IJC) has stated:
“Due to strong public interest, the IJC has extended the deadline for written comment until September 30, 2012.”

OTTAWA – Today’s announcement by federal environment minister Peter Kent will further relax already grossly-inadequate regulations for coal-fired power plant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite growing evidence of climate change, particularly this summer’s record Arctic Ocean ice-loss, the government of Canada continues to ignore the science.
“Arctic Ocean ice is at an all-time low and we are in the midst of a record breaking year for heat waves, droughts and torrential rain storms,” said Sierra Club Canada Executive Director John Bennett. “We don’t have 50 years to fix this problem as the regulations will allow – action is needed now!”

Did you get a letter from Brampton Brick recently?
If you submitted an objection to the Norval Quarry in December 2010, you've most likely received a Notice of Objector Response via registered mail from Brampton Brick. Under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA), Brampton Brick is required to respond to all objectors within a two year period, expiring on November 4, 2012. It is important that you respond to reconfirm your objection to the Norval Quarry within 20 days of receiving Brampton Brick’s notice, otherwise your concerns are withdrawn and deemed no longer valid. Although Brampton Brick has updated a few of their component studies since your original objection letter, almost all of our original objections remain outstanding.
There has been almost no contact from Brampton Brick attempting to resolve any of our concerns!
