Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge facing the world in the 21st century.  A change in climate of only just a few degrees could have a profound impact on the world.  In fact, Canada is predicted to be one of the hardest hit countries due to our northern location.  Rising temperatures, rising sea levels, and a substantial loss of habitat and biodiversity are very real possibilities by the end of the century if immediate action is not taken.  At the same time, our population continues to grow as do energy demands.  Unfortunately, nuclear power is not the solution.  Nuclear power plants in Canada are notorious for cost overruns, long-term maintenance problems, and their environmental credentials are deeply flawed.  Sierra Club Canada is...
It is often overlooked that there is a direct correlation between an individuals’ health and the health of their environment.  Canadians are entitled to a healthy lifestyle and that means they are entitled to a healthy environment.    Yet, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, based on current incidence rates, 40% of Canadian women and 45% of men will develop cancer during their lifetimes.  Meanwhile, thousands are estimated to die each year in Canada due to air pollution and those numbers are expected to rise without immediate action.  In addition, Health Canada estimates that 90 Canadians die annually, while a further 90,000 become sick due to water contamination. Sierra Club Canada is working to deliver a healthier environment for a healthy population...
Canada is often cited for its ecological richness. Indeed, Canada is comprised of 15 terrestrial and 5 aquatic ecozones, and is surrounded by 3 oceans.  In addition, Canada has approximately 25% of the world's wetlands, 6.5% of the world's renewable water supply, 10% of the world's forest cover (30% of the world's boreal forest), and boasts over 71,000 known and an estimated 66,000 as yet unknown species of plants and animals.   Nonetheless, plant and wildlife in Canada is often taken for granted.  Only 8% of our forests are protected, regulations around the protection of our water are weak, and the existence of many species is becoming increasingly threatened due to unsustainable development practices, pollution, and climate change.    Canada ranks 7th out of the...
The economy of the 21st century will necessarily need to be a green one.  Those countries that take that notion to heart will be in the best economic position going forward.  The idea that we can continue to consume more and more, year after year is neither sustainable nor desirable.      Talk of “green jobs” and “green products” is spreading, but a true transition to a sustainable economy will require government cooperation at all levels as well as innovation.  In essence, all levels of governments have a role to play in fostering such a transition, while at the same time ensuring that it is fair and equitable to all members of society.  Sierra Club Canada is working to promote reducing our ecological footprint, while...
