Forgive My Pessimism

After the first week, COP26 has presented some small steps forward for the environment. Forgive my pessimism, but I am not convinced it will be the solution to the broad environmental problems we face.

Before even beginning, the conference suffered from access issues.

In 1992, 30 years ago, more than 100 nations signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – a treaty designed to cut back on global emissions. Each country, developed and developing, agreed that they had a responsibility to fight climate change and that they must work together to address the growing issue.

Decade of Change 2020 - 2030

It was in 2013, eight years ago when the carbon monitoring station in Mauna Loa measured levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at levels above 400 parts per million for the first time in human history. Since then, investigations by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ascertain that we cannot let the atmosphere reach 430 parts per million of carbon dioxide to avoid global warming beyond 1.5 degrees, at which point there will be far reaching consequences for life on earth.

Good Start. Now Let’s Get Serious About 2030

Sierra Club Canada Foundation is pleased to see the inclusion of legislated target dates, including the phase-out of coal-fired electricity generation by 2030. We’re also glad to see more focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and assurances that sustainable prosperity will be part of every government department’s mandate.

Politicians must show leadership on mega-hydro

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL - The Sierra Club Canada Foundation, Grand Riverkeeper, and North American Megadam Resistance Alliance submitted a letter today to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well as the premiers of the Atlantic provinces calling on them to oppose the Gull Island mega-hydro project. The Gull Island project is proposed to be built in the Grand River/Mistashipu area (colonially known as Churchill River) of Labrador.
