About Wild Child Sierra Club
The Wild Child program of Sierra Club Canada Foundation has been connecting children, youth, and families to nature since 2010. The mission of our Wild Child programs is to provide child led, play based learning through repeated exposure to nature helping to foster a lasting relationship with the natural world.
Wild Child Edmonton & Area
Sierra Club's Edmonton Nature Immersion program is a free enrichment program offered for early learning centres, after school programs and/or kindergarten classrooms located in Edmonton and Area. Wild Child gives children the opportunity to engage positively with the natural environments in their communities; through games, art, discussions and various fun activities, children learn about our native plants, animals and trees, and basic ecological concepts including; conservation, habitats, life cycles and more. Children are encouraged to use their imaginations, minds and bodies to explore wild places and discover all the wonders they have to offer.
This nature immersion program is designed to strengthen the “outdoors” component of existing early learning centres and/or kindergarten classrooms. The program was developed by Sierra Club in response to the growing body of research showing that children need experiences in the natural world for healthy development, addressing the issue of 'nature deficit disorder', where increasingly children are disconnected from nature in their day-to-day lives.
"If children can look deep into nature, discover nature, play in nature and use their creativity and imagination in nature, then they can truly understand their connection to the world around us” –Paulina Retamales- Edmonton Wild Child Project Coordinator
“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks” – John Muir
