Active Transportation

Through the leadership of Sierra Club member David Laing and a keen group of local cyclists, Bike Brampton is in it's third year of operation. June is Bike Month, and Bike Brampton's signature event is Bike the Creek. Over 500 cyclists participated in this year's third annual Bike the Etobicoke Creek event on June 18. Bike the Creek is a FREE event aimed at encouraging people of all ages to discover the joys of cycling. Four route options were offered this year, suiting all ages and levels of expertise from first time to seasoned participants.

Bike the Creek 2016 showcased the Etobicoke Creek Trail, Fletcher’s Creek Trail, Brampton and Caledon natural valley lands, parks, ponds, and a number of historically significant sites. Experts from Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, City of Brampton Heritage and Town of Caledon lined the routes with strategic pavilions, explaining  features and stamping passports for a chance to win fabulous prizes. The catered lunch was sponsored by Region of Peel and Walk + Roll Peel.

That's not all! Sierra Peel members David, Dayle, Polly and Ernst, along with a dedicated team of Bike Brampton volunteers facilitate 'everything biking' throughout the year, from Critical Mass rides each month, to volunteer-led community rides through Brampton neighbourhoods, to free bike clinics where the young and young at heart can learn to repair and maintain their own bikes.

David is also Chair of the City of Brampton Bicycle Advisory Committee as well as Co-chair of City of Brampton Environmental Advisory Committee.

Here's the latest post from the Bike Brampton website: On June 8th, 2016 — during Bike Month — the province of Ontario announced it’s much-anticipated Climate Change Action Plan. In April 2016, cycling advocates were asked to asked to call on the Province to invest in cycling infrastructure, and Ontario delivered. The plan includes several “actions that support cycling“, as well as other strategies that “will put Ontario on track to reduce transportation-related emissions while also helping to reduce the fuel costs of moving people“. http://bikebrampton.ca/
