Round #7 of NAFTA renegotiations is underway in Mexico. Canada has indicated interest in scrapping a significant piece of the trade deal, called Investor-State Dispute Settlement system (ISDS). This is a big leap from their position only months ago, and you should take credit for helping convince the government that this is a move in the best interest of Canadians and our environment.

ISDS is a troubling mechanism whereby corporations can sue NAFTA countries outside of the jurisdiction of their own courts, and which has seen claims against a country in the hundreds of millions of dollars (to refresh recent memory, Bilcon, a Delaware company, has made a $500M claim against Canada under the ISDS mechanism under NAFTA, in response to having their Bay of Fundy mega-quarry project rejected after a federal and provincial environmental review recommended a strong "No." Sierra Club Canada Foundation was in federal court several weeks ago to defend the original environmental review that put a stop to this project in the first place.

This is a really pivotal point in NAFTA renegotiations, so let's keep the momentum going, and have our voices be heard. We demand a NAFTA that protects our environment, reflects our global climate commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, removes provisions that demand we sell climate-altering fossil fuels, supports worker and human rights, and defends our sovereignty.

Thank you for taking action.
