Sierra Club Canada Foundation responds to Bay du Nord comments from Federal NDP - Media Statement

For Immediate Release: March 24, 2022

The Sierra Club Canada Foundation is responding to recent comments from the Federal NDP on the proposed Bay du Nord oil project with respect to an upcoming decision on the project from the Federal Cabinet.

“Bay du Nord is impossible to justify from a climate or environmental perspective. Scientists have warned that new production of oil is incompatible with climate targets and this project is not part of a just transition,” says Heather Elliott, local Newfoundland and Labrador campaigner with the Sierra Club Canada Foundation. “The International Energy Agency has put forward a road map that meets global energy needs and climate targets and projects like this, that would take years to come online, are not needed. A recent report has even suggested that Canadian oil production should end by 2034.”
