On Wednesday afternoon, we received the decision from the federal court that, while our case questioning the regulation exempting exploratory drilling from impact assessment was serious enough to warrant judicial review, the exemption itself could come into force even as we continue to pursue the case.

St. John’s, NL, June 04, 2020 – Ecojustice and its clients welcome the Federal Court’s decision to reject the federal government’s attempt to shut down a judicial review application challenging a flawed Regional Assessment (RA) on the impacts of exploratory drilling off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Environmental groups taking legal action against federal government over flawed environmental impact assessment

ST. JOHN’S, NL – Environmental groups are taking legal action against the federal government for failing to properly assess the impacts of exploratory drilling for oil and gas in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore waters. It is the first Regional Assessment (RA) to be conducted under the new Impact Assessment Act.

Take Action - NO Exemption for Exploratory Drilling from Impact Assessment

If you read the secret memo from the oil lobby to Canada’s government closely, one of the things the oil and gas industry wants under cover of the COVID-19 pandemic is an exemption for exploratory drilling from impact assessment.

Right now, nine projects - potentially drillling 144 exploration wells - are on the books to start off Eastern Newfoundland. These projects will immediately get approved if this gift to the oil industry is granted.
