TAKE ACTION -- While Brazil Burns, Canada Fiddles With Brazil-Canada Trade Agreement.

Sierra Club Canada Foundation stands firmly with indigenous communities and the people of Brazil and neighbouring Amazonian nations.

At a time when any Canadian government should be leading by example to prevent irreversible climate catastrophe, Canada is negotiating the Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement with Brazil.

Brazil’s President Bolsonaro is encouraging lawlessness, illegal deforestation, and with reckless rhetoric and gutting of environmental protections, he is pushing this singular place on earth closer to the brink.

Sierra Club and Allies Respond to New Protections for Right Whales in Canada

Media Release - Not Enough Being Done To Prevent Extinction
NOT ENOUGH BEING DONE TO PREVENT EXTINCTION

Sierra Club Canada Foundation is alarmed that not enough is being done to prevent the extinction of North Atlantic right whales in Canada's waters. Sierra Club and allies have signed a joint letter in response to new right whale protection measures announced by the Canadian government.

THESE SEVEN BABIES

You likely recall the joyous news in the new year at the safe arrival of seven right whale newborns (see the photo album of the 2019 Calves below.)

It was extraordinary news, given that not one baby had been born the year before.

But we find ourselves facing the devastating reality that eight critically important right whales have died in Canadian waters this summer.

It means these new little lives must be protected on an emergency basis.

I fear for their safety, at such a precarious time in their first precious year of life.

Emergency Actions Needed To Protect Remaining North Atlantic Right Whales

“With four dead right whales reported in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, more needs to be done to prevent more deaths,” states Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Program Director at Sierra Club Canada Foundation.

The cause of the deaths of the whales has not been determined but researchers are desperately trying to find out why these whales died. The 12 right whale deaths in the Gulf of St Lawrence in 2017 were linked to entanglements in fishing gear and ship strikes.
