“BP was responsible for one of the worst oil spills in history in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This risk cannot be re-created in the North Atlantic, where the conditions are so much more dangerous. We know there is no way to clean up a spill in the environment where Bay du Nord would be developed, and weeks would pass before equipment would be available to cap a well,” according to Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Programs Director, Sierra Club Canada Foundation.
BP was found to be reckless and responsible for the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The 2010 spill resulted in the deaths of 11 oil workers and 30 million gallons of oil from the BP spill remain in the Gulf — the equivalent of nearly three Exxon Valdez spills. Oil from the spill continues to coat the ocean floor, and the disaster continues to affect fish and wildlife in the area over a decade later.
Sierra Club Canada Foundation and Équiterre with representation from EcoJustice are currently challenging the approval of Bay du Nord.
