Nova Scotia Wide Petition to Ban Fracking

This Thanksgiving weekend marks the official launch of Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter’s petition to ban hydraulic fracturing operations in Nova Scotia. The petition was launched at a public event outside the CORE All Energy Conference, coinciding with a “Town Hall” session led by Energy Ministers from PEI, NS, and NB.

The Petition Supporting a Legislated Ban on Hydraulic Fracturing for Natural Gas in Nova Scotia will run from October 7th to November 30th and will seek signatures from supporters of fresh, accessible water for present and future generations of Nova Scotians.

Sierra Club Atlantic calls for commitments to protect water

ORWELL – Sierra Club Canada – Atlantic Canada chapter is asking for a ban on fracking for natural gas, an end to fish kills and degradation of rivers through nitrates and sediment run off, and an investment in sewage treatment for Charlottetown as three key commitments needed from candidates in the P.E.I. provincial election. Sierra Club Atlantic members gathered on P.E.I. last weekend to celebrate their 10th anniversary and to talk about key issues in the region. One of the key areas discussed was the need to protect Prince Edward Island's precious water ways and fresh water resources.... Read more »

Water concerns will flow in PEI election campaign

Edith Perry gives plenty of thought to water.

She has had no issues to date with her own well in Millview. She can pour a fresh, clean glass of water from her tap any time.

Still, Perry need not look beyond a stream that runs through her property to conjure up concern. She fears the possibility of chemical runoff from neighbouring farms, though she is quick to laud farmers in her area for commitment to crop rotation and in stringently following buffer regulations.

Taking a broader look at water, however, gives Perry cause to sound an alarm or at the very least to take part in delivering a collective wake-up call.

She belongs to a group of concerned citizens called Our Water Matters Coalition that is determined to provide awareness about water issues on Prince Edward Island during the current provincial election.
