  • STOP THE RADIOACTIVE ROADTRIP

    One day soon, people in Ontario may spot an armed convoy passing through their town. Heavily armed guards will be protecting trucks carrying thousands of litres of radioactive waste containing highly enriched (weapons-grade) uranium in a toxic mixture of acid and countless other radioactive isotopes. It will be the most dangerous transport of nuclear waste ever attempted in Canada.

  • Action Alert; Citizens concerned about the Norval Quarry must reconfirm their objections.

    Did you get a letter from Brampton Brick recently?

    If you submitted an objection to the Norval Quarry in December 2010, you've most likely received a Notice of Objector Response via registered mail from Brampton Brick.  Under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA), Brampton Brick is required to respond to all objectors within a two year period, expiring on November 4, 2012.  It is important that you respond to reconfirm your objection to the Norval Quarry within 20 days of receiving Brampton Brick’s notice, otherwise your concerns are withdrawn and deemed no longer valid. Although Brampton Brick has updated a few of their component studies since your original objection letter, almost all of our original objections remain outstanding.  

    There has been almost no contact from Brampton Brick attempting to resolve any of our concerns!

  • Fracking, Shale Gas and Children's Health: Toxins and Vulnerable Populations

    When it comes to exposure to hazardous chemicals, children are not just little adults. “Children are more vulnerable to environmental hazards,” states the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, a subcommittee of the American Pediatric Society. “They eat, drink and breathe more than adults on a pound for pound basis.”(1) This means children are proportionally more exposed to toxins in air, water and food.

    In areas of unconventional gas development, children are exposed to multiple industrial toxins, through air, and potentially through water and soil. Yet children’s health remains one of the many unexamined issues of this contentious industry.

  • Keep It Blue: Protecting Our Gulf from Oil Drilling

    You are invited to attend this important community event about our Gulf of St. Lawrence.  Nova Scotia, particularly the North Shore, and western Cape Breton, is dependent on the Gulf for renewable jobs in tourism and the fishing industry. As residents, the Gulf is central to our way of life. 

    The Gulf of St. Lawrence is a semi-landlocked, inland sea and breeding area for over 2,000 marine species who spawn, nurse and migrate year around. Because the Gulf’s waters only exchange with the Atlantic once a year due to its counterclockwise currents, a spill could wash up on the coastlines of all five Atlantic provinces over the course of a year.

  • Support for Growing the Greenbelt along Credit River Valleys

    (Mississauga) -- The urban river valley designation announced today by Premier Dalton McGuinty enables municipalities to add publicly-owned lands to Ontario’s Greenbelt and ensures that important water connections between the Greenbelt and Lake Ontario will be protected. For Mississauga, growing the Greenbelt along the Credit River provides the greatest protection for these often stressed urban features.

    A Greenbelt designation would draw a permanent, legal boundary around a local urban river valley. Future municipal councils could only expand this boundary, but under the Greenbelt Act, 2005, the area of protection cannot shrink.

    “By adding our Credit River valley lands to the Greenbelt we are providing the greatest protection available to these treasured natural features,” said Rosemary Keenan, Chair of Sierra Club Peel Group.

    Sneaky suburban invader? Pesky predator?  Mangy mutt? Wile E. Coyote?

    Are any of these the taglines that come to mind when you think of the Canis latrans? Many people are familiar with this clever wild canine; however, there are many misconceptions out there that give these creatures a bad name. I hope that this small article will help bring coyotes out of the shifty shadows of misunderstanding and into the light of respect.
