The Foundation and its Mission
Sierra Club Canada Foundation (SCCF) is a registered charity whose mission is to be a voice for the earth. We work to protect and preserve the natural environment and to empower people to be stewards of the earth in their communities. Since 1971, the SCCF has funded tens of millions of dollars’ worth of important work, from small local projects to large, multi-year campaigns with many volunteers, organizers and scientists.
We are ready to take on the challenges coming our way. But we can only do that with new members like you.
It takes one person – YOU – as a valued member of our national family – to build and sustain the kind of movement that our Founding Director Elizabeth May envisioned.
It's no coincidence that Valentine's Day and World Whale Day fall in the same week. Because right now, these majestic creatures need our love more than ever before.
Make a gift in support of our campaign to protect critically endangered whales, and we’ll send a special someone (or you!) this one-of-a-kind whale tail pendant, designed just for Sierra Club supporters.
Just wrapped up our hearings in federal court regarding a US quarry company's bid to extract $500 million from Canadians for rejecting its damaging project. Madam Justice Mctavish informed the court that she will now take the arguments she has heard and provide her judgement at a later time.
Last weekend, women in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia organized a Women’s March. The Sandy Cove Women's March garnered international attention last year as one of the smallest marches in the international event to show strength and solidarity for women’s rights in the face of the Trump presidency.
"Protecting Water for Future Generations" warns that increased storm water discharges created by urbanization "adds sediment to streams that can negatively impact fish and other aquatic species" and also "increase water temperature, affecting the survival of fish species such as brook trout that need cold water". It stresses that Brook Trout will not survive in warmer water created through the ecological degradation associated with urbanization.
Because of your support and strong commitment to the environment, we were able to take on some very challenging campaigns this year:
Sometimes around this time of year, sleep is hard to come by.
As you know, this is when we start looking toward next year and reflecting on how we are going to be prepared to fight for the things we care about.
Family. Food. Warmth. Safety. Home.
These are the things I’m thinking about in the intensifying few days leading up to the holidays.
It always makes me think about our families of wildlife, out there in the elements, finding their way. I’m in awe of their resilience, their own unique family and social structures, and how they have adapted over millennia. I wonder how they do it.
"...The more we all know about and love the ecosystem that embeds and surrounds us, the more we feel that we are a part of it, the more we will see ways to enjoy, protect, and enhance what we have..."

We are in court this week defending whales and the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the harmful effects of oil and gas exploration. You can read why and how right here.
The official announcement came on December 7th. The province is proposing to grow the Greenbelt by up to another 345,000 hectares (see Figure 1), adding on to the 810,000 hectares already in permanent existence plus the extra 10,000 hectares of urban river valley lands and wetlands that were announced this spring. This is a truly impressive proposal.
You love it. We love it. And it's back!
