Alberta Government Creating Fake Demand for Pipeline with Major Projects Pitch
Media Release: For Immediate Release, October 2nd, 2025.
The Alberta Government’s resounding failure to find a private sector backer for an oil pipeline [major projects pitch] to the west coast is the clearest signal yet that the oil and gas age is coming to an end according to Sierra Club Canada.
“This talk of a new pipeline was always only a distraction meant to provide cover for funnelling as much public money towards oil and gas corporate profits as possible,” says Conor Curtis, Head of Communications at Sierra Club Canada. “Oil and gas corporations know their industry is dying economically, even when production increases they still cut jobs. You’ve got the CEO of Shell warning of an oversupply of LNG and that’s gas; oil’s economics are even worse.”
“To Albertans we have this to say: these corporations are lying to you – they knew a pipeline was impossible and they lied to you. Together we can build a renewable economy instead, it won’t be easy but there is still time, but we need all levels of government and we need communities to act now.”
Global demand for oil and gas is set to peak this decade and then decline, and there are enough projects already underway to meet that demand. The policies and resulting impact of the current U.S. Administration will not change this fact.
Canada can and must start a rapid transition to a fully renewable economy with a focus on building up renewable jobs through major projects in places currently reliant on oil and gas for employment says Sierra Club Canada.
