The U.S. wants to force oil drilling onto Greenland: Canada must not help the U.S.

Send a message via this form: Canadian corporations attempted to facilitate oil exploration and drilling by a U.S. firm in Greenland – even though the U.S. firm was acting without approval by Greenland’s government.

Update August 14th, 2026: the shipment from Canada scheduled for September 12th is uncertain after Canadian companies walked back their plans following public pressure. They have now claimed they will not take any actions without approval by Greenland’s Government. As far as we can tell the Québec-based shipping company did not – and still does not – even have permission to land in Greenland despite previously confirming a booking.

It is still vital the Canadian Government ensure these corporations and any others – act only in accordance with the wishes of Greenland’s Government in the future and that public vigilance of these corporations continue. The Canadian Government must not allow Canadian corporations and Canadian ports to play a role in helping the U.S. and U.S. corporations force oil exploration and drilling onto Greenland.

But as the Guardian previously reported “Greenland Energy representative has said a vessel carrying its 300 shipping containers of drilling equipment is to set sail from Canada on 12 September [2026 – it is unclear if that shipment would also to contain any drilling equipment from Canada, but use of a Canadian shipping company and a Canadian port is bad enough].” The Port of Valleyfield in Quebec is where the shipment would leave from. Oil and gas interests are also working to undermine Canadian sovereignty, there have been concerning statements by Canada’s Energy Minister claiming that Canada will help with U.S. energy dominance, as well the recent Canadian Federal enabling, and financing, of gas plants in Canada for the use of U.S. AI and tech corporations.

Remember: Greenland will be under immense pressure from the U.S. Administration to allow oil drilling – and enthusiasm for that drilling by Canadian corporations only adds to that pressure.

As The Energy Mix reports it’s raising renewed fears of an annexation by the U.S. of Greenland in all but name:

“It might sound like a small oversight or even an accidental error. But ‘by placing logistics elements in there, preparing for the drilling, it sends a signal that ‘we’re going to go ahead and do this with or without your approval’,’ Maj.  Gen. (Retd.) Scott Clancy, a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and former NORAD director of operations,’ told Global News. ‘Or we’ll ask for approval after we have it, which you’ll have no choice but to give.’ Either way, he added, ‘that sets a very difficult precedent as it pertains to the protection of sovereignty.'”
